Hungary is a country at the heart of Europe, but it is certainly different too in so many ways!
While not large in terms of population (it has only 10 million inhabitants) Hungary has a wealth of culture and history, complemented by a language so completely different from its neighbours that almost no shared words exist!
It can be said that ours is a land of great contrasts:
Hungary is landlocked like its neighbours Austria, Slovakia and Serbia though it still deserves the nickname "land of waters", as it holds the largest lake in Europe (Lake Balaton) and is crossed by mighty rivers which divide and define its regions. Even its capital city is split by the Danube River, with Buda on the Western side and Pest on the Eastern bank. As well as water to cool off in, Hungary can be the perfect place to keep warm, as it is located over a very active geo-thermic area and has over a thousand thermal water springs and the second largest thermal Lake in the world for bathing (Lake Hévíz). "Taking the waters" for relaxation or as clinical treatments, is an important part of the Hungarian culture.

According to an old saying if you spring a well in Hungary sooner or later you will find thermal water. Geologist can confirm it by maps showing that underneath 80% of Hungary's scope there are thermal water resources warmer than 30 degrees.
In Hungary there are numerous natural facilities on which medicinal tourism and wellness can be built: 1289 thermal sources, 39 spas, 5 medicinal caves, 48 approved mineral waters and 136 medicinal water sources, 4 silt quarries and 1 mofetta.
The therapeutic effect of thermal waters enables a wide range of uses both in terms of prevention and treatment. The materials in the water are absorbed into the body through the skin, at the same time the body excretes certain materials and also during bathing the solutes in the steam over the water are inhaled. Thermal medicinal waters' typical indications are for locomotor, gynaecological, dermatological problems. The medicinal waters can be used not only for bathing but in case of disorders of the stomach, the intestines or the kidneys and also in case of certain metabolic disorders they can be used within the confines of a drinking course. Inhaling the steam of medicinal water is recommended against respiratory complaints.
Thermal waters are rich in calcium, magnesium, hydrogen-carbonate, chloride, sulphate, iron, radioactive, also containing alkalis and a substantial amount of fluoride.
LAKE BALATON
Whether it's peace and quiet you're after or a calendar full of things to see and do, Lake Balaton is here to satisfy your every need. Smooth waters and fresh wines, sand and surf, fishing and frolicking, splashing and sailing, concerts and clubs, partying and paddle boating, beach volleyball and biking, elegant castles and sleepy villages, beautiful landscapes and crystal clear air, Lake Balaton has it all.
The highlights on the northern shore of Lake Balaton include romantic strolls along the pretty streets of Balatonfüred oozing 19th century charm and hiking to the top of Tihany for a breathtaking view of the lake in the lavender scented air. Just a few million years ago geysers spouted hot water into the air on the Tihany peninsula. Take a hike on the lunar landscape near the Inner Lake to see the evidence. Just a short ride from here to the west, between Balatonudvari and Örvényes, you'll find one of the most spectacular golf courses of Hungary, Royal Balaton Golf & Yacht Club.
The volcanic slopes further west along the shore are the perfect terrain for refreshing white wines. Badacsony is a perfect spot for hiking, but a local myth makes it even more worthwhile for couples. If you and your loved one sit on the Rose Stone with your backs to the lake (it's hard to turn away from the view, we know), legend has it you'll be married within a year. Now that deserves a toast, right? Explore the many wine cellars and their fabulous wines and mouth watering dishes until you find your favourite one. Behind the basalt mountain of Badacsony you can find the fairytale valley called the Káli Basin. Visit its lovely quiet villages and move on to the mineral waters at Kékkút, source of Theodora Quelle waters.
At the western peak of the lake, you won't only find the source of health in the largest natural medicinal thermal water lake in the world in Hévíz, but also one of the three largest baroque palaces of the country, the Festetics Palace in Keszthely. If you like great contrasts, after the grandeur and elegance of the palace, don't miss out on the area's tiny jungle, the Little Balaton. It's paradise for endangered plants and for birds, with tens of thousands arriving as if for an annual convention at migration time. Patient birdwatchers have counted 250 species, of which 100 nest here and 27 are protected.
The southern shores of Lake Balaton will lull you with their quiet charm. Small towns oozing character, living traditions of arts and crafts, spas and wineries,; exquisite castle hotels and the largest walnut plantation in Europe.. But your trip to Lake Balaton won't be complete without visiting the party capital of the area, Siófok. After chilling out on one of the many lidos or practicing your wakeboarding moves on the silky smooth water during the day, this small town caters for all your partying needs with club complexes and beachside pubs where dancing on the tables is the norm, and everything in between.
PUSZTA AND LAKE TISZA
East of the Danube and south of the mountains lies the flattest and quietest land of Hungary, and the largest continuous grassland in Europe, called the Great Plain. Rivers run through it, national parks divide it, Hungarian cowboys and herds of animals roam it, and spas fill it with life. This is the land where life is hassle-free and where horizons are endless.
The Hortobágy National Park area offers you the experience of getting out into some big open space right here in the heart of Europe, with nothing else in sight but loads of cranes and other birds, plus the native horned grey cattle. In the summer, the quivering hot air over the endless grassland creates funny illusions and mirages. This is where gulyás (aka goulash) was invented, by herdsmen who dumped all their food in one pot over a fire, added some paprika, and there it was.
This region, and the park, is also home to Lake Tisza, a wildlife wonderland as well as a sports paradise. You can go hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, biking, swimming, jet-skiing and even banana-boating in this idyllic environment. The Bird Reserve in Tiszavalk is not only part of the Hortobágy World Heritage Site but is home to around 200 bird species, including herons, egrets, and wagtails.
Although the Great Plain is the driest and sunniest part of the country, there are plenty of spa cities here where you can soak, splash, and heal. Why not start with the largest spa complex in Europe, in Hajdúszoboszló, where they know the secret of how to cure back pain? Or how about heading to Gyula where the beautiful spa was built with spectacular views in mind? A tropical spa in the greenest part of Debrecen where you can recuperate and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city sounds like just the ticket, right? But if you need more space, there's a 4400 m2 of water paradise in Szeged to refresh you after all those Puszta explorations.
